As I hang up the receiver the kids go upstairs and silence once again settles in. What is it about the phone that makes children lose their minds?! It's like the ring of the phone triggers some sort of hyper-active gland in their brain that makes them go completely bonkers! Even Havana (9) has no questions about her homework, isn't hungry, and doesn't want to talk about her day until......... you got it........ I'm on the phone. I have even found myself locked in my closet for an important conversation with the kids banging from the other side. I know what you're thinking... Bust their tails! Let me tell ya- I do, but I think that very same gland that makes them crazy when the phone rings also gives the children amnesia! So from now on if you want to talk to me my new office hours are 9:30 pm to 11:00 pm. If I'm not in, one of the children probably needs a sippy.

~ Can you hear me now?! ~
All is quiet on the home front. The munchkins have been good all day playing independently and I have hardly known they were here. The phone rings. It's my life-long best friend, Jess. We live only minutes from each other but barely ever get together because we both have very young children, and it seems easier just to stay home with our monotony. We begin trying to fill each other in on what's new in our lives when suddenly my kids start screaming, crying, and pulling at my shirt tail. I put her on hold to assess the situation. I finally get it resolved and continue on in my conversation. Two minutes later..... they're back!!! Just then, I hear the same bellowing from the other end of the phone. It sounds like something out of a horror movie! The high peaking shrills of the unhappy ring from every direction. I march my little ones up the stairs... "Stay here if you want to cry for no reason," but they follow me back down the stairs. Wailing all the way. Jess and I begin trying to speak over them. "AND SO THEN, WHEN I TOLD HER......" Jess continued. "WHAAAT, SPEAK UP......" I say. After much yelling over top of the children and half hoarse we finally accept our defeat. "I'll call you when it's less crazy....." we say in sync.
